The airborne nature of this elite regiment is illustrated by the depiction of an open parachute in the centre of their emblem. Formed during WW2 by Churchill who was impressed by a German airborne strategy during the Battle of France, this regiment was then composed of volunteers from the Army and recruitment is still similar today. Potential members of the Paras must have at least six months of blemish-free Army time under their belts before they can apply for the rigorous selection procedure. Incidentally, even though the parachute emblem and name will never be removed, the last time this method of deployment was used by the Paras in an operation was back in 1956 during the Suez crisis.
