Military Clothing – Explaining the Purpose of Military Clothing
The are obviously many tangible benefits arising from the design of military clothing for today’s battlefield but the overriding principles and purposes of military clothing remain largely the same as they have always been.

Military clothing today is, of course, considerably less ceremonial as was once the case as the importance for military clothing shifted to place the emphasis on being applicable for battle scenarios that soldiers are likely to encounter in the arena of war. However, military clothing does have many purposes and these have remained fairly steadfast throughout history from ancient Rome to the more contemporary battlefields of Iraq and Afghanistan. The use of military clothing today is obviously has much more emphasis placed upon the safety of the infantry and military personnel who wear it but by exploring the purposes of military clothing it is possible to garner a much greater understanding about its origins and the important role that it has to play in combat today. Military clothing is increasingly being worn by civilians as well due to the highly durable nature of its construction and many companies offer military clothing replicas that are highly valued for all sorts of civilian activities such as rock climbing.
Military Clothing – A Multitude of Benefits
Exploring the primary purposes of military clothing is imperative in understanding how it has come to fruition and the factors that have shaped military clothing for today’s modern warfare. Just some of the main purposes that military clothing is designed to adhere to include:
• Camouflage – Obviously, much military clothing is designed to help conceal soldiers from sight and this is done by utilising military clothing that blends seamlessly with the backdrop where the battle is transpiring. For example, in the sand based battle in Iraq, the military clothing is of a material and colour to provide camouflage for these surroundings whereas in the jungle based combat of Vietnam, the military clothing was greens and browns to help infantry blend in and remain undetected.
• Manufacture – In modern warfare, it is necessary to produce military clothing quickly and efficiently in order to supply high quantities of troops. By having standardised military clothing, it is possible to mass produce military uniforms and equip soldiers in a short space of time.
• Uniqueness – Another purpose of military clothing is, of course, to distinguish one set of warring factions from another. This is imperative in modern warfare where friendly fire is proving problematic but in a historical sense, military clothing was often seen as important as it made it easy to spot deserters.
