Military Clothing – A Look Through the Ages
Military clothing has certainly changed substantially since it was first recorded but the ethos behind military clothing remains the same in the sense that military clothing is the standardised dress used to characterise a nation’s military.

For anyone interested in military history, it has been impossible not to notice the extent to which military clothing has changed over the centuries to the technologically advanced incarnations that are witnessed on the battlefield today. Of course, the principle reason for this is that as weaponry became more advanced so too did military clothing and this is something that is almost certainly set to continue in the future. Military clothing is obviously as diverse today as it always was in the sense that each nation around the world which has a centralised army is likely to have military clothing that is quite disparate to other nation’s military clothing. However, by looking at certain key points through history, it is possible to obtain a snapshot of the evolution of military clothing which will elucidate the principle elements that came together to make military clothing what it is today. Of course, military clothing is quite a generalised term and encompasses a great many types of clothing ranging from combat gear to army personnel t-shirts.

Military Clothing – With Great Power
According to most reports, the first generally accepted instance of full military clothing in history belongs to the all conquering Roman army who had a distinct and standardised form of military clothing which principally consisted of red undergarments covered with body armour, which often varied depending on rank and various other factors. The Ottoman Empire is another who noticeably wore a set of military clothing amongst their armed forces. However, it is important to realise that these early examples of military clothing weren’t standardised in the same sense as military clothing witnessed today. Military clothing in this early point in history certainly serve the purpose of showing a soldiers affiliation but it was uniform clothing so far as every soldier having a standard issue form of military clothing.

Military Clothing – The Emergence of Military Clothing in Recent History
By the 19th Century, it is fair to say that military clothing had reached its ornamental zenith and this is borne out by the military clothing that was seen in battles such as the Napoleonic War which was highly decorative in appearance. By the time of WWI and WWII, the military clothing worn by infantry had become much more standardised and less decorative as the notion of camouflage became more imperative. As for the military clothing worn by today’s army personnel, it is safe to say that it has transformed into a form of clothing that is actually much more suitable for military engagement and has many safety and camouflage advantages.
