Clothing – The Bear Grylls Effect
Military clothing and army surplus gear is in demand as more people turn
to outdoor survival; it's been dubbed the 'Bear Grylls effect' as the
former SAS man braves jungles and deserts in his Channel 4 series Born
Survivor.
Bear Grylls's TV series may be called Born Survivor, but the survival
skills he demonstrates are not the kinds of thing we're born with: it
takes years of training. Bear is no stranger to wearing military clothing.
Before becoming a TV survivalist, he learned his discipline, strength
and fitness in the territorial army. His military clothing now may not
be worn in armed combat, but he still goes to war against the extremes
of nature – whether it's biting the head off a live snake, eating
bugs for protein or butchering a dead camel for food, water and shelter,
Bear still pushes himself to extremes.
Military Clothing – A Survival Instinct
Being a TV survivalist in extreme scenarios has a strong bearing on
his military background. Grylls first wore military clothing when he
served with 21 SAS and completed a six-week combat survival course. His
training ended up with him becoming a survival instructor. And then Grylls
began his TV career; one of the most grueling TV series Bear did was
donning military clothing to join the French Foreign Legion for the series,
Life in the Legion. Grylls then moved into specialising as an adventure
survivalist, with his TV series Survivor, which followed him setting
up camps in hostile environments. Born Survivor sees Grylls back on our
screens, despite a recent controversy after it was leaked that the man
packed up his military clothing and survival gear and headed off to five-star
hotels instead of camping out in the wilds as his TV show suggested.
The Bear Facts
But despite the on-going debates about
the ethics of TV-making, Grylls continues to entertain and impress. His
experience in the army wearing
military clothing grounded his future career, instilling in him a physical
and psychological endurance and stamina. Aged 21, Grylls broke his back
sky diving, but two years later he climbed Everest. His career has seen
him fly a paramotor over the Himalayas, swim with sharks, cross the Atlantic
in a raft and cross deserts and jungles across the globe. “Ultimately,
the programme is showing people how to survive in life-threatening emergencies.
It is not all about me,” Grylls told the Telegraph in response
to the controversy over his TV shows. More tourists are venturing into
adventure holidays, some even invest in military clothing and army surplus
gear and go looking for adventure and survival challenges. And for the
rest of us, Grylls goes into these situations so we don't have to: it
may be extreme survival but it also makes for great entertainment.
