Description
The oldest independent aerial military force in the world (meaning it was not combined with any other service or regiment at the time), the RAF dates right back to 1918 when it was formed during the last year of World War One. This Royal Air Force metal cap badge is designed to be worn at the front of the standard Blue RAF beret
The badge depicts a laurel garland topped with a crown (the Queen’s crown), and the lettering across the middle is of course ‘R.A.F.’ It comes with a split pin to attach it to a beret.
The Royal Flying Corps and the Royal Naval Air Service were combined to form the RAF on 1st April 1918 and this cap badge design started out as a copy of the RFC badge, which in turn was very similar to the previous Sapper badge. In fact, all that has changed is that the crown has become the Queen’s version rather than the King’s, and the lettering became RAF instead of RFC.
